Conceived as a book whose format echoes a youth album, and whose title cites Rudyard Kipling’s masterpiece, this volume recounts Yann Gross’s journey along the Amazon River. Its golden spine and embossed cover make this beautiful reportage an abridged version of the contemporary culture of indigenous peoples between Brazil, Colombia and Peru. The captions and full-length portraits play an educational role, namely, to reawaken our memory of the legendary Eldorado. At the time, however, the contemporary social and cultural complexity of ethnic minorities emerges and reminds us of reality. We learn that a rapper from the Guaraní people sang at Dilma Rousseff’s inauguration. The beauty of the landscapes, the animals, the portraits, and the architecture makes the report oscillate between dream and humour, between innocence and depth. A fold-out map intensifies the memories of a treasure hunt. We close the book and wish we were there. [Denis Pernet]
