The Sundance Festival in Salt Lake City (USA) is the most important independent film and virtual reality festival in the world. The 2018 edition runs from 18 to 28 January. Backed by Pro Helvetia in partnership with Dart17 and Swissnex SF, two outstanding Swiss VR projects have gained a slot in the «New Frontier» programme section:
VR_1 by Gilles Jobin and Artanim
Renowned choreographer Gilles Jobin transforms spectators into dancers. Equipped with a VR Avatar, they move in unison with virtual dancers through a virtual world. The technology behind it was developed by Artanim, a VR startup. The piece previously won the audience award at the Festival du nouveau cinéma in Montreal.
Elastic Time by Imverse and Mark Boulos
EPFL startup Imverse has developed the means to conjure up virtual space from a single photograph. Together with Swiss-American video artist and film maker Mark Boulos, its creators have used the technology to produce «Elastic Time», an immersive mixed-reality documentation, in which spectators are turned into a hologram of themselves and move time and space of their own accord.
