Whether through the skin, a gaze or a camera, touches always leave impressions. These are ephemeral signs of human existence to which this book, after the first illustrated book “Passengers,” is dedicated. While the first volume had gathered impressions of nocturnal travellers at a bus station in Poland, the second presents a photographic search for traces in Parisian suburban buses. Against a black background and in the evening sunlight, the shots of windows and the passengers seated behind them seem to come from another sphere. The fine accumulations of dust particles, the formations of scratches and streaks on the glass appear mysterious. The impressions of human skin, hands, fingertips, cheeks, forehead are almost as if they were being viewed under a microscope, as direct signs of the communication of strangers. The faces of those depicted mostly seem introverted, their gaze directed out into the distance, portraits lost in thought in a lost profile. The commuters become space travellers whose system of paths emerges as a cosmos in its own right. [Alice Wilke]
