Gianna Conrad
Innovation & Society Specialist

Since the beginning of April, Pro Helvetia has been using the «Close Distance» call for applications to find new art formats that deal innovatively with limited mobility in the age of Covid-19 and use new strategies to overcome distances. The first projects have been selected and come from artistic disciplines that Pro Helvetia supports. «Within a short time, numerous projects have already been submitted to us. We were impressed and delighted by the wealth of ideas submitted from a wide range of artistic disciplines and language regions in Switzerland, » says Seraina Rohrer, Head of Innovation and Society at Pro Helvetia.

Supported projects in the first selection:

Matthieu Corpataux – «En attendant, écrivons»

«Let us write in the meantime» (En attendant, écrivons) is an initiative to promote writing in times of isolation. In this virtual writing workshop on Facebook, a professional Swiss writer gives daily input on writing and invites participants to join in.

Nicolas Polli – «HomeLife StillLife»

HomeLife StillLife is a platform for professional photographers promoting photography at home with what they have at hand. No need to have a photography studio, this project allows to practice art without the usual equipment.

Manuel Burgener – «MOREsites»

MOREsites is a new web platform for artists, which serves the distribution of artistic editions. What is new is the structure of MOREsites and the fact that 100% of the sales go to the respective artists. Between 10% and 20% of the sales proceeds are paid into an account by the artists, which finances the initial production costs for the next artist.

Association Insurbordinations – «Projet_8»

This initiative enables eight composer duos, four from Switzerland and four from abroad, to create a piece from a distance. Each of them works and records in their own studio. In addition, eight videos of these compositions will be released between September and November 2020. They will contain interviews with the composers and musicians, who will present their works and provide insight into their work.

ClubCultureCH – «Make Some Room: Electronic Relief in Switzerland»

For the compilation «Make Some Room: Electronic Relief in Switzerland», over 150 Swiss musicians provided music within a very short time. This project is a cross-section of alternative, electronic music creation in Switzerland. The compilation shows solidarity: 100% of the proceeds go to the participating musicians. It has been on sale since 7 April 2020 for a minimum price of CHF 25.
