Pro Helvetia fosters cultural exchange and promotes contemporary Swiss art and cultural production with a view to diversity as well as national and international appeal. Residencies and research trips enable artists and other cultural practitioners to build global networks, gain inspiration and come up with new projects.
Pro Helvetia therefore supports residencies and research trips by cultural practitioners from Switzerland and from the regions covered by its liaison offices (Arab region, China, Russia, South America, South Asia, West Africa, Central Africa, East Africa and Southern Africa). Eligible are cultural practitioners such as curators, artists, event organisers and art educators working in the disciplines supported by Pro Helvetia. Research trips are also possible in the context of transdisciplinary projects that art practitioners plan to realise in collaboration with specialists from outside the world of arts.
To further strengthen its mandate of intercultural exchange and to offer support to artistic practices that result from previous exchanges, Pro Helvetia is launching a two-year pilot measure to support co-creation. It is seen as a next step after a completed research trip or residency. More information can be found here.
Pro Helvetia also offers Swiss arts practitioners residencies in other countries besides those covered by the liaison offices. This includes writing residencies for literary practitioners and residency programmes for emerging performing artists and emerging visual artists at various locations such as Palazzo Trevisan in Venice and the Swiss Institute in New York. As part of the «Connect» programme, practitioners from all arts disciplines have the possibility of a residency at a renowned research institution such as CERN. On occasion, Pro Helvetia also supports residencies at other institutions. Information on this is provided via social media.
In a pilot project, Pro Helvetia supports artists who are parents of underage children by offering additional financial support for childcare and children’s travel in order to facilitate these artists’ participation in residencies or research trips. This additional funding option applies to research trips and new Pro Helvetia residency calls that will be published here.
