The Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia supports residencies and research trips by cultural practitioners from Switzerland (e.g. artists, curators, event organisers, intermediaries) to the countries covered by its six liaison offices, as well as to other selected regions (Arab region, China, Russia, South America, South Asia, West Africa, Central Africa, East Africa and Southern Africa). In addition, Pro Helvetia supports residencies and research trips to Switzerland by cultural practitioners from specific countries. Artists and cultural practitioners from the following fields may apply: visual arts, design and interactive media, music, literature, the performing arts and artists with a transdisciplinary focus.

Funding is available for

  • Residencies These last a maximum of three months with the call for applications announced once a year (application deadline: 10 March)
  • Research trips These are limited to four weeks. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, but should be submitted at the latest three months prior to the start of the trip

Pro Helvetia also offers residencies for visual arts practitioners from Switzerland in cooperation with the Swiss Institute in New York.

Residencies for cultural practitioners from Switzerland

Cultural practitioners from Switzerland may apply for residencies in the countries listed below via myprohelvetia.ch. Applications may be submitted once a year (application deadline: 10 March). Applications must be submitted in English. A list of possible residency partners can be found on the websites of Pro Helvetia’s liaison offices (see below).

Pro Helvetia supports maximum three residencies per person. Cultural practitioners from Switzerland may apply for residencies in two different regions covered by Pro Helvetia’s liaison offices. Two separate, complete applications must be submitted. A maximum of one application per person will be approved within the framework of one call for applications.

Residencies serve to gain inspiration, to establish networks and to start thinking about projects. Pro Helvetia offers accommodation, travel costs, a daily allowance, professional mentoring, a workplace (on request) and a contribution to production/material costs (on request).

Selection criteria

  • Convincing track record: artistic activity with a national/cross-regional reach
  • Motivation regarding the chosen context
  • Sufficient knowledge of the respective foreign language(s)
  • Concrete exchange project with a lasting impact

Residencies at the Swiss Institute in New York

Visual arts practitioners from Switzerland may apply for a residency at the Swiss Institute New York. Applications may be submitted once a year (application deadline: 10 March) via myprohelvetia.ch. Applications must be submitted in English.

Visual arts practitioners from Switzerland may apply simultaneously for residencies in New York and in another region covered by one of Pro Helvetia’s liaison offices. Two separate, complete applications must be submitted. However, a maximum of one application per person will be approved within the framework of one call for applications.

Residencies serve to gain inspiration, to establish networks and to start thinking about projects. Pro Helvetia offers accommodation, travel costs, a daily allowance, professional supervision, a workplace (on request) and a contribution to production/material costs (on request). Residencies last a maximum of 3 months.

Selection criteria

  • Convincing track record: artistic activity with a national/cross-regional reach
  • Context-related motivation
  • Sufficient knowledge of the respective foreign language(s)

Residencies for cultural practitioners from outside Switzerland

Cultural practitioners from the countries listed below may apply for residencies in Switzerland via myprohelvetia.ch. Applications may be submitted once a year (application deadline: 10 March). Applications must be submitted in English. A list of possible residency partners can be found below.

Cultural practitioners from Switzerland may apply for research trips to the countries listed below via via myprohelvetia.ch. Applications may be submitted on an ongoing basis, but at the latest three months before the trip is due to begin. Applications must be submitted in English.

Research trips are limited to a maximum of four weeks and are intended to provide inspiration, to network and to conduct research. Pro Helvetia offers accommodation, a daily allowance, professional mentoring, travel costs, contribution to production/material costs (on request) and a workplace (on request).
