Call for Applications
Submission deadline for residencies in 2021: 1 March 2020
At any time up to three months before the start of the trip
Egypt, India, China, South Africa, Russia: these are the countries where Pro Helvetia maintains liaison offices. In collaboration with the latter, we support residencies for Swiss artists in these regions. At the same time, Pro Helvetia facilitates residencies in Switzerland for artists and cultural practitioners from the above-mentioned regions.
We offer two kinds of residencies: Three months’ residencies and researchtrips. Applications for residencies can be submitted once a year, from December until March. Research trips are limited to four weeks; applications can be submitted at any time.
Artists and cultural practitioners (e.g. curators, event organisers, mediators) in the areas of the visual arts, design and interactive media, music, literature, theatre and dance are eligible to apply. As from 2017, residencies are also offered for Swiss visual artists (incl. performance, photography, new media and design) in New York in partnership with the Swiss Institute New York.
During a three months residency in China, Egypt (and other Arab countries), India (and other South Asian countries), Russia, South Africa (and other Southern African countries) or, conversely, in Switzerland and in New York, gives artists the chance to gain a broad insight into a different cultural environment. The aim of the residency is to find inspiration, establish networks and contemplate new projects and cooperations. In addition to a place to work (on request) and accommodation, Pro Helvetia will provide specific coaching. The Swiss Arts Council covers the costs of travel, insurance (in Switzerland only), per diem expenses and to some extent production costs (on request). The number of residencies per person supported by Pro Helvetia is limited to maximum three. Applications from Swiss artists for two different offices abroad regions are possible. Two separate and complete applications must then be submitted. The maximum number of applications granted under this call is one per person.
