In 1998, the Ensemble Phoenix Basel appears on the cultural landscape and quickly established itself as a leading contemporary music ensemble, specializing in today’s music and late 20th century repertoire. It performs in variable instrumentation from a trio to thirty musicians. In addition to its commitment to academic contemporary music, it develops concerts in collaboration with artists from the fields of noise, sound art, free improvisation and electronica.

Ensemble Phoenix performs an annual concert cycle in Basel and is a regular guest at international festivals.

In the 2025/26 season, Ensemble Phoenix Basel will premiere new works by the Swiss composers Aleksander Gabryś, Martin Jaggi and Eleni Ralli.

Aleksander Gabryś

Aleksander Gabryś is a Basel-based double bass player and composer. His oeuvre as a composer includes solo works for double bass, chamber music and computer music, always with a tendency towards paratheatrical forms.

On 13 and 14 December 2025, Ensemble Phoenix will premier his new work ‘Rio, my Rio‘ in Basel. It is a journey of sound in which the double bass takes centre stage – optimistic, full of movement and quiet hope.
