As the second edition of the Illustration Masterclass for children’s book illustrators commences, this occasion serves as an opportunity to present the programme and facilitate an exchange of experiences between previous and current participants.

Launched in 2024 by Pro Helvetia in collaboration with its liaison offices in Cairo, New Delhi, and Shanghai, this programme, spanning three editions, aims to foster professional dialogue, deepen knowledge of international markets, enhance visibility in the international book scene, and establish a network for children’s book illustrators from the regions covered by Pro Helvetia’s liaison offices (Arab region, East Asia, South Asia and Vietnam) and Switzerland.

Both the first and second editions—organised on behalf of Pro Helvetia by Johanna Schaible (Switzerland) and Hemali Sodhi (India), and Nina Wehrle (Switzerland) and Solene Xie (China), respectively—invited eight children’s book illustrators to participate in online and in-person workshops and seminars. For the in-person part of the programme, first edition participants attended the Drukyul’s Literature & Arts Festival in Bhutan, while second edition participants will be participating in the China Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair.

To gain insight into the experiences of programme participants, current participants were invited to pose questions of interest to former participants. Below is a summary of their shared experiences.

On the programme and gaining new insights

Did the programme shift your perspective on picture books and storytelling? How do you see yourself integrating these new lessons into your work?

During the Masterclass sessions, participants engaged with various professionals from the picture book industry, gaining diverse insights into storytelling techniques. We reaffirmed that a book should not be viewed solely as a product; rather, there is significant potential in the activities surrounding it, such as readings, workshops, games, musical readings, and board games. Following the Masterclass, participants are likely to have greater confidence to explore alternative methods of storytelling.

On preparation for the programme

How would you recommend preparing for the trip and the Illustration Masterclass?

Before each masterclass session, it is recommended to prepare a few questions on the respective topic to enhance understanding. Travel preparations are highly individual and should be tailored to specific needs. Ensure all necessary visas, identification, medication, and a sketchbook are ready. Bringing postcards or similar items as giveaways for participants and other individuals you may meet is also advisable. Additionally, having sketches of current projects and copies of published books for presentation can be very beneficial.

On balancing the schedule

How did you organise your schedule?

The Masterclass was well-organised, featuring personal check-ins and expert lectures. However, it was essential for participants to create their own timelines and schedules to effectively pace their project. The advance schedule provided by the Masterclass was instrumental in helping participants navigate and prepare their own timelines.

On mentor and peer feedback

During the course of the Masterclass, how were you able to receive and benefit from feedback on your work?

Having diverse perspectives from various backgrounds and skill levels enriched the conversations about work, process, and visual presentation. Practical tips, like rough storyboarding techniques or thematic focus, proved invaluable. Significant insights from writers, illustrators, and publishers who generously shared their experiences were also provided. This Masterclass fostered a small, safe, and supportive environment for connection, sharing, and mutual learning.

On navigating cultural contexts

In the multicultural setting of the Masterclass, what do you think were the key principles for ensuring clear and respectful communication?

It is advisable to speak clearly and concisely, although this sometimes proved challenging due to nervousness during group Zoom sessions. Online meetings, in general, do not always foster spontaneous conversation and lack tangible elements that physical meetings provide. Consequently, it is recommended to take extensive notes, make small sketches, and ask numerous questions. The Masterclass was conducted in a highly respectful manner, ensuring consistent comfort in participation. As always, it helps to listen attentively, allow others to finish speaking, and ask questions.

On (re)vision

How did you manage to maintain your own vision and voice while also being open to feedback that could change your perspective?

Illustrators constantly seek better ways to enhance their work, which involves embracing diverse perspectives, broader concepts, and open-minded thinking. The constructive feedback received from various cultural contexts during the Masterclass often aids in refining and reimagining one’s work.
Creating a book is an exploration of its concept, and valuing different voices throughout the journey is essential. However, the ultimate decisions must always be made by the creators. As experience grows, it is crucial to continuously reflect and assess which suggestions are feasible and how to incorporate them at different stages.

On personal growth

How has the Masterclass experience influenced your work now, and what lasting impact has it had on your approach?

Given a multicultural setting and exposure at an international level, the Masterclass proved to be quite insightful and fruitful. The most significant takeaway was the flexibility and fluidity the Masterclass provided. It offered room to experiment and indulge in one’s craft, supported by a constant and enthusiastic support group.

On career advice

What was the most useful career help you received from the Masterclass?

The access and resources provided by the Masterclass are unique and invaluable. Participants interact with industry professionals who possess impressive backgrounds and extensive experience, which would typically require years of networking and contact-building to access. This interaction offers a significant boost to one’s career, ensuring that ideas are presented effectively to the right audience. Additionally, receiving feedback from peers and industry professionals on specific projects is highly beneficial.
