Fabrika Center for Creative Industries along with 8XR game studio have created a Digital AiR virtual art residency program to empower and educate artists seeking to learn more about virtual art and start working in WEB3 and the metaverse.

Digital AiR is a virtual residency program for artists that merges in-depth discussion and education through digital medium. This format is best suited for those with scarce digital experience but interested in exploring digital as a medium, acquiring new knowledge of a rapidly developing ecosystem, and gaining hands-on experience in creating art on a metaverse platform.

In 2023 during Digital AiR Season 4 the invited participants Ruth Baettig (Basel / Lucerne), Vladislav Dovgopyaty (Moscow), Polina Enuvesta (Cyprus), Lynne Kouassi (Basel), Sonata Rayymkulova (Bishkek) explored the work process on 8XR virtual platform for five months, worked with the project team and each other to create a discursive platform and community built on mutual respect and interest in digital practices. The topic of the Season 4 was “Life-Size Model: space / architecture / common ground in the time of uncertainty”. The result of this work were the authors’ digital projects, each in a separate virtual space in the Factory. They are available here.

Digital AiR: the structure of the format

The duration of the residency program is 12 to 14 weeks with approximately 10 participants in each season.

The curriculum starts with a 4-week learning phase during which the participants meet and discuss WEB3-related topics with the thought leaders of the ecosystem. Several educational sessions with 8XR representatives are also scheduled.

The last 8 weeks are dedicated to the creation of artwork on the residency topic of the season. The participants have access to one-on-one sessions with the technical support team to complete that task. The works will be exhibited in the virtual premises of the Digital AiR-digitized venues of CCI Fabrika.
